Outpatient Psychiatry Peer Specialist

Job Responsibilities:
1. Consistently assists consumer in regaining control over their lives based on the principles of recovery and resiliency.  

2. Actively works to engage patients who have recently been admitted to a crisis stabilization unit in a effort to facilitate the engagement of ongoing treatment service in the outpatient departments.

3. Responsibly prepares and delivers group and individual recovery related activities to individuals with severe and persistent mental illness and/or co-occurring substance abuse disorders in diverse settings.

4. Consistently serves as an advocate, mentor, or facilitator for resolution of issues that a consumer is unable to resolve on his/her own.

5. Reliably consults with other service providers on a regular basis in order to monitor services and assist to communicate and coordinate needs.

6. Consistently advocates on behalf of the patient in order to maintain needed resources; advocates in a manner that promotes independence by encouraging and teaching patient to advocate for themselves.

7. Reliably completes all documentation requirements.

8. Consistently maintains a minimum productivity standard of 123 hours per month.

9. Actively participates, at a minimum of 2 time per month, in individual supervision meetings by presenting issues and ideas related to implementation of job duties and by receiving feedback related to job performance, as well as participating in at least one clinical staffing per month.

10. Routinely participates in program meetings, team staffing, and agency meetings as required.

11. Independently manages daily schedule by prioritizing work responsibilities and individual patient needs.

12. Routinely demonstrates good attendance and reliability by doing the following: consistently reporting to work on time; reliably working within performance standards; not abusing the leave/PTO policy; adequately planning leave and making every effort to cover responsibilities in exigencies; and coordinating training/workshops/meetings with supervisor as necessary.  

13. Reliably utilizes staff training opportunities to enhance skills needed for delivery of patient services.  Maintains a minimum requirement of training per year and attends all mandatory training.

14. Promptly attains/maintains competency with agency electronic health record and uses it effectively within required time frames.

15. Consistently displays cultural competence and sensitivity and ensures services provided incorporate patient-specific cultural values.

16. Independently operates a motor vehicle in various conditions (ex: daytime, nighttime, fog, rain) and maintains a valid Florida driver’s license and auto insurance. Consistently adheres to Florida traffic and driving safety regulations.

17. If not already obtained, successfully obtains Florida Peer Certification within 6 months of hire.

18. Carefully adheres to peer-to-patient boundaries as per the Florida Peer Certification standards and maintains active certification status.  

19. Successfully completes other related duties as assigned by supervisor. 

Job Qualifications:
  • Requires a H.S. diploma or Equivalent.
  • Peer Specialist Certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Requires lived experience with having been or currently being a recipient of services for persistent mental illness or co-occurring services.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license, current auto insurance, a reliable vehicle and a good driving history. 
  • Computer skills in Windows operating systems required.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with individuals who may be confused and/or irate. 
  • Must be able to independently maneuver through a variety of environments (including those that are unclean) and interact effectively with persons from various cultural backgrounds.
